What are bullying and some myths about it

Bullying in school or the workplace is a worldwide problem that can cause a huge problem in the life of students or adults. Bullying is included in direct behavior such as teasing, taunting, threatening, hitting, and stealing initiated by one or more students against a victim. It can be defined as a chronic pattern of abuse over time; physical for psychological harassment of persons who are less or not able to defend themselves from being a victim of bullying.

According to Childcare La Canada Flintridge, CA teachers, bullying can be direct with face to face physical or verbal confrontations, or sometimes indirect with less visible actions such as spreading rumors or social exclusion. It always involves an unequal power relationship between the bully and the victim.

There are many false beliefs about bullying. The list below clears up some of the misconceptions:

Myth: Most of the time bullying happens in the school buses.

Fact: School is the place where most of the bullying happens.

Myth: Bullying happens in big cities.

Fact: Like any big city, bullying is quite common in rural schools. But there may be a greater awareness in the bigger cities.

Myth: Many says bullying does not happen in smaller schools as they have a safer environment.

Fact: bullying can happen everywhere.

Myth: Bullies have low self-esteem.

Fact: Bullies look quite confident and they are not anxious or insecure about anything.

Bullying is at its worst in the middle school, though peer harassment increases right after third grade and slowly diminishes following 10th grade. It has been seen that boys are more exposed to bullying especially the direct attacks than girls and girls are more exposed to indirect, subtle types of social harassment like slandering, social exclusion, spreading rumors, manipulation of friendship, etc. Bullying can create an environment of fear that permeates a school and becomes a deterrent to learning.
